The second largest metropolitan area in New York State is Rochester NY. It was first located between three cataracts on the Genesee River because the founders saw the potential of water power in the area for industry. The location was chosen purchased and the foundations of the city were laid by Col. Nathaniel Rochester Major Charles Carrol and Col.William Fitzbugh. Rochester new york The city is named after Col. Rochester.

Rochester became an industrial city and was known as the Young Lion of the West. It was also called flour city because the main industry was flour. The post civil war years gave new impetus to industry in Rochester NY. Rochester was the home of many prominent historical personalities particularly African American anti slavery activists. The population of Rochester NY has not grown in recent years although its industrial activity has not diminished over the years.
